Greed is a 1924 silent film directed by Erich von Stroheim, considered one of the masterpieces of the silent era. Based on Frank Norris' 1899 novel McTeague, the film tells the story of a simple dentist, Dr. John McTeague, whose life descends into madness and violence after winning a lottery. The film is highly regarded for von Stroheim's meticulous detail and the powerful performances of its cast, including Gibson Gowland as McTeague, ZaSu Pitts as his wife Trina, and Jean Hersholt as his friend Marcus. The film’s famous climax was shot in Death Valley for two months in the summer, causing many of the crew to get sick.
